about

After a slow atmospheric build-up reminiscent of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Pistols at Dawn erupts into a playful yet powerful Jethro Tull-style riff. At various points you'll notice improbable nods to Ravel’s Bolero, Abba’s Dancing Queen, and the works of Wendy Carlos, all combining to set the tone of eccentricity that follows.

lyrics

Pistols at Dawn lyrics:

Don't think that you've got me fooled for a minute.
Don't think that you've got it all sussed out.
Don't say, as you turn away,
I'm going to rue the day I kept at bay
A gnawing doubt.

Don't tell me the hours bleed into minutes.
Don't tell anybody else you're here.
Don't look in the other book,
You'll see the words I took out of your mouth
Into my ear.

Fear her riddle as she learns,
The memory goes on and on and on.
Hear me fiddle as she burns,
The melody goes on and on and on and on.

Don't wait for an answer, there's nothing in it.
Look close, for you bear the mark of Cain.
Don't hope that you'll ever cope,
You'll never find the scope to free your mind
And cleanse your brain.

Don't think that you've got me fooled for a minute.
Don't think that you've got it all sussed out.
Don't say, as you turn away,
I'm going to rue the day I kept at bay
A gnawing doubt.

Born to a mystery, hoping for it to unfold:
Awaited it.
Look in our history for a future not yet sold:
Located it.
Merely the memories of it make the blood run cold:
I've rated it.
Caught in a temporary hold before the joke gets old.

Close your eyes and then count to ten,
Then open them and I'll be ready.
My disguise, as the judge of men,
Is nothing short of ordinary.
Poisoned lies, from a poisoned pen,
I feel is revolutionary.
Take the prize and remember when
You knew me as your adversary.

Don't enter the contest, you'll never win it.
Don't beat a retreat from all you love.
Don't cry as you wonder why
They never glorify the iron hand
In velvet glove.

Fear her riddle as she learns,
The memory goes on and on and on.
Hear me fiddle as she burns,
The melody goes on and on and on and on.

It's nature versus nurture versus Nietzsche.
