about

A booming church organ intro is followed by an acoustic folk verse and a reggae-inspired chorus – but that’s not as bizarre as Life Goes On gets. Around the three-minute mark, things take a darker turn and the track descends into a journey of Mellotron string quartets and electronica, all before rebounding back into a bright and breezy Madness-style close.

lyrics

Life Goes On lyrics:

One day, once upon a time, drifting in and out of thin air,
Ideas shot down in their prime – we really didn't have a prayer!
We burn the midnight oil as we come to life,
Inherit a crown of thorns and a heart of oak,
A silken cloak you adorn.
We're spoiling for a fight,
Because (or despite) our life goes on.

It was roses all the way, and always in the fullness of time
You're expected to obey: a punishment befitting the crime.
It's always a golden boy with a silver tongue
Engulfed in another ploy, though he'll run before the battle's won.

On the brink of a lover's touch,
Do you think that another such is healthy?
Don't tell me that life goes on.
On the brink of a lover's scorn,
Do you think that another dawn is healthy?
Don't tell me that life goes on.

One day, once upon a time, drifting in and out of thin air,
Ideas shot down in their prime – we really didn't have a prayer!
We burn the midnight oil as we come to life,
Inherit a crown of thorns and a heart of oak,
A silken cloak.

On the brink of a lover's touch,
Do you think that another such is healthy?
Don't tell me that life goes on.
On the brink of a lover's scorn,
Do you think that another dawn is healthy?
Don't tell me that life goes on.

It begins:
My muscles jerk, and I shake
And shiver as my lungs ache
With every breath that I take.
Then it ends:
My eyelids flicker, you start
To ridicule a fine art
And claim a stake in my heart.
It begins just as quick as it ends.
It begins just as quick as it ends.

It was roses all the way, and always in the fullness of time
You're expected to obey: a punishment befitting the crime.
It's always a golden boy with a silver tongue
Engulfed in another ploy, though he'll run before the battle's won,
And we're all –
All spoiling for a fight,
Because (or despite) our life goes on.

Golden promise, golden lyre,
Trying not to set the Nene on fire.
Going nowhere thick and fast,
Come and nail your colours to the mast.

And when the party's over, we go outside
Just as the dawn is breaking.
And with your heart now open, I slip inside
In time to feel its aching,
And it goes on and it goes on and it goes on –
Until they play our song.

On the brink of a lover's touch,
Do you think that another such is healthy?
Don't tell me that life goes on.
On the brink of a lover's scorn,
Do you think that another dawn is healthy?
Don't tell me that life goes on.
